Thinking of saying "I’m off"? My advice: Better not, at least not right now!

The golden days when professionals could quickly land a new job are over. Reorganizations, geopolitical uncertainties, and rising unemployment call for caution. Anyone jumping ship without a plan now might end up being “on the road” longer than expected. Stay calm, act strategically, and prepare your next move carefully.

Thinking of saying ‘I’m off’? My advice: Better not, at least not right now!”

The Swiss job market – especially in the life sciences sector – has changed significantly. The golden days of two years ago, when a shortage of skilled workers made changing jobs almost effortless, are over.

Today’s situation is complex:
Big Pharma is reorganizing, roles are being cut or frozen, and geopolitical uncertainties, potential tariffs, and shifting investments to the U.S. are creating caution. Whether Switzerland will continue to serve as a reference for pricing in the U.S. remains uncertain – all factors that add to the overall insecurity.

The unemployment rate has risen to 3.1%, a clear increase compared to last year. Those who once felt secure – professionals in research, development, or corporate functions – are particularly affected. Among tertiary-educated workers, unemployment has jumped by 20% in just one year.

A top education is no longer a guarantee for a job.

And for anyone thinking, “I’ll find something new quickly” – reality is tougher:

  • Fewer positions are being advertised
  • Hiring processes take longer
  • Hundreds of applications compete for each attractive opening

HR managers report receiving thousands of applications per month – in some cases double compared to last year. Job postings are often closed after just a few days due to the overwhelming response.

The key message: Don’t quit impulsively.
Yes – your boss might be annoying.
Yes – the 2026 bonus might be modest.
Yes – the business results may not be inspiring.

But many people are in the same boat. The market today is very different from 2023 or 2024. Jumping ship without a plan could leave you “on the road” longer than expected.

My advice:

  1. Stay calm
  2. Think strategically
  3. Take the next step only when your foundation is solid

In uncertain times like these: better not take off just yet!
